All-New Toyota Prius

April 24th, 2011

If you do some research on hybrid vehicles, and specifically trying to learn everything you can about the Toyota Prius, it should be a great place to start. Over the next few weeks, I will write a series of posts about the most popular hybrid cars in a relatively short history of hybrid cars. Rather than start with the first and oldest Prius model, and will move forward, we begin with a preview the next version and finish, returning in time.

Rumors about what we supposedly know so far.

Firstly, the new generation Toyota Prius gets much-needed increase in the engine, the transition from the 1.5-liter engine we’ve seen from 2004-2009 to 1.8 liter power plant.

In addition, the new Prius is an inch wider and and inch shorter. Statements were made by Toyota, the next generation Prius could include some form of hybrid option (aka PHEV) and lithium-ion battery. Lithium batteries are said to be more powerful and lighter than nickel units in the last year model Prius.

Not so much … yet.

Probably the best available information about how the next Toyota Prius will be different from what we’ve seen over the past 5 years comes from a test drive and an article in Popular Mechanics. Thus, the prototype mentioned in this article has 1.5L engine, along with two (2) Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries – the same used by the current version. The driver was able to reach speeds near 50 miles per hour, using only batteries and estimates that this prototype will be able to travel 3-4 km, never bringing the gas engine.

Does anyone have a clue?

Next Generation Prius features sophisticated three-link independent rear suspension, exceptional rigidity due to extensive use of high-strength steels, and high crash-safety evaluation.

Ethanol

April 18th, 2011

High gas prices have been an eyesore for all drivers over the past few years as they continue to grow steadily. That is why alternative fuels such as ethanol have received so much attention during the same period. Some believe that it may be the savior of U.S. energy policy, while others see it as a fad, which is a popular subsidized corporate backers.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about ethanol. The reality of its role as a viable alternative to petroleum-based gasoline is much more complicated. Although at present is not so often absent or used as fuel, it can become a prominent part of U.S. and world stocks of fuel in the coming years.

What is ethanol? Ethanol fuel produced from plants. In the United States, the main plant that uses corn. The process of creating corn into fuel involves grounding it into a fine powder, adding water and then heated. Then the enzyme is added to convert the mixture into sugars, which are then fermented with yeast. The result is a liquid, which is about 10% alcohol. By distillation, alcohol is separated and used as fuel ethanol.

Why the noise about ethanol? Ethanol has several advantages compared to gasoline. First, it is a renewable resource, and it burns much cleaner. Secondly, it can be domestically produced, cutting our dependence on foreign oil. Brazil has made great strides in reducing imports to almost zero by the use of domestically produced ethanol.
